GSK – SAM Labs

GSK contracted Cyma Builders as the construction manager for a 2,800 SF renovation of their existing SAM Lab to accommodate new bio-reactor and associated process equipment and optimize the layout and flows of the space. The original project schedule of 24 weeks required reduction to 19 weeks in order to accommodate key business milestones. Cyma managed this through a strategic use of 10 hour workdays and weekend activities. The project was successfully completed in accordance with the accelerated schedule and within budget.
The new laboratory required demolition of the existing architectural finished along with an existing cold box to accommodate the new layout. The HVAC system was upgraded with new VAV’s and brand distribution while leveraging the existing central supply and exhaust infrastructure. Temporary balancing was performed to minimize impact to surrounding spaces during construction. Utility distribution to support the program included power, CA, N2, O2, vacuums and DI water, which required strategic shutdowns of existing facility infrastructure for tie-ins. A new process chiller and chilled water distribution was installed to eliminate local chillers and allow for more efficient operation of the process. New architectural elements and finishes included a resinous epoxy floor and sliding glass doors to segregate spaces within the laboratory.
